FAQ

  • Can I purchase a game board?

Gettin’ By is designed as part of a training to ensure everyone gets the full experience. For that reason, we do not sell game sets. However, we can rent them if you would like to host a session. You will need to do a 40-minute facilitator training session with our team before we will send the materials.

  • Is the training only offered in person?

We can do sessions in person or online. In addition to the physical game boards, we also have an online version. That means we can host the training via the meeting platform of your choice (i.e. Zoom, Teams) and participants can play online.

  • Can we do the training ourselves?

Yes! If you do not want Linda Riddell (the founder of Gettin’ By) to host the training, you can choose to “Do-It-Yourself.” With this option, you will choose a designated trainer who will host. We will provide you with everything you need to host the training (detailed instruction + demonstration of the game, facilitators guide, sample emails, and the game sets).

  • What if we don’t have two hours to spend?

We can shorten the training to 90 minutes, or we can do it as two one-hour sessions. A single hour-long session would give participants a “taste” of the content, but not the full experience.

  • Why purchase the Gettin’ By training?

Every individual and organization leaves the training with steps they can take to improve their work with people living in poverty. Gettin’ By not only provides practical everyday tools but an ethical framework to build a poverty-sensitive mindset. People learn and grow from the Gettin’ By program and have easy steps to maintain what they learn every day.

  • Does it work?

From a research project with pediatric medical residents, we proved that attendees had a significant shift in their attitude toward poverty after they completed the training. The research was presented at two academic conferences in 2023. See here.

  • How is gettin’ by different from other poverty simulations?

For sponsors, gettin’ by has much lower resource and time demands than a classic poverty simulation – no need for trained volunteers, a gym-sized space, or a half-day of time. Gettin’ by can be done in a meeting room or virtually in two hours.

Gettin’ by focuses on poverty's pervasive impact on the brain and therefore on how people can receive help. It does not focus on money or the hassle of coping with poverty. It gives participants guidance and tools for making their work more effective with low-income people. It’s not just poverty awareness; it’s steps and tools to be poverty-effective.
