Three Interesting Things – AI vs. Humans, Business Magic, and Superior Poverty

Yay! It is another three-interesting-things-that-Linda-stumbled-across-recently post. These generally show up when brain cells are frazzled.

The truth is that the rest of our lives — and our work — are saturated with a lot more disorder, unpredictability and humanness, so much so that I don’t think AI applications will always (or even often) be able to account for the variations.

From Isaac Saul’s article, Let’s see if AI can do my job. Saul is the editor of Tangle Newsletter, which I highly recommend for its unique approach – they show the right-leaning and left-leaning news sources for each major story, and then give an “our take” on it. I took heart in this article in particular, for obvious reasons!

Less is More: The Magic of a Simple Business A colleague sent me this video about focusing on doing one thing and doing it well. Gettin’ By has lived this principle – our sole purpose is to help professionals work more effectively with low-income people. Period. A colleague and I plan to hold a one-hour discussion of this video. If you are interested in joining, drop me a line.

China uses American poverty to distract its citizens, much like parents goad their children into eating dinner by saying  “Children in Africa are starving!” The message is to be happy with what you have because other people have less. The goal is to distract attention from the (not ideal) current circumstances.

Interestingly, poverty in China and in the U.S. have traits in common. For example, in both countries, a serious illness can push a family into poverty. However, poverty is more visible to people in the U.S., where people sleep “rough” and beg on street corners. Such images are horrifying to people in China, where such things are tightly controlled giving the impression that Chinese poverty is superior to American poverty.

Maybe this scare tactic works well in the Chinese culture. It did not impress my five-year-old self, who would have gladly sent my green peas to anyone who was hungry.
